Multicolor photon emission from organic thin films on different substrates

Abstract Thin films of 1-pentyl-2 / ,3 / -difluoro-3 /// -methyl-4 //// -octyl- p -quinquephenyl and 9,10-Bis (4-pentylphenylethynyl)antracene organic molecules were grown on optical glass, silicon and porous silicon substrates. First optical and luminescent properties of such hybrid composites are thoroughly studied using spectroscopic techniques. The strong decrease of aggregation in thin films of 1-pentyl-2 / ,3 / -difluoro-3 /// -methyl-4 //// -octyl- p -quinquephenyl on porous silicon was observed. The possibility of simultaneous red, green and blue tunable photon emission from organic film/porous silicon hybrid structure is demonstrated.
Absorption edge in silica glass

Measurements of optical absorption in the v-UV range in a variety of silica glass are used to determine the width of the absorption edge (Urbach energy). Measured values range from 60 meV up to 180 meV. So high a variability over silica types is tentatively ascribed to the different disorder degree, which characterizes different materials.

Abstract Sponges (phylum Porifera) of the classes Hexactinellida and Demospongiae possess a skeleton composed of siliceous spicules, which are synthesized enzymatically. The longest spicules are found among the Hexactinellida, with the stalk spicules (length: 30 cm; diameter: 300 μm) of Hyalonema sieboldi as prominent examples. These spicules are constructed around a central axial filament, which is formed by approximately 40 siliceous layers. The stratified spicules function as optical glass fibers with unique properties. High third and second order non linearities of chalcogenide glasses and fibers for compact infrared non linear devices.

Due to their intrinsic nature, chalcogenide glasses present attractive nonlinearities from third and second order, with values reaching between 10 and 1000 times those of silica. We present a study of their properties and their shaping with the purpose to reach efficient devices in the near-mid infrared.
